Christine can say volumes with poses and expressions, can't she? The hands on hips, the glowering expression aimed straight at the reader. One need not be familiar with the theme of the strip or the characters to know that this kid is seriously ticked off at being forced to wear the over-the-top girly dress. Which, by the way, looks as if it were swiped from Little Audrey's closet).

You know, there's one minor detail that seems noteworthy--the band-aid on little Mars' leg. As I sort of touched on in my previous comment, Christine has this uncanny ability to say "this kid is transgender" in very subtle ways. The band-aid clues us in immediately that this is a very rough-and-tumble kid who'd much rather be climbing trees, thank you very much....

Seeing this, Mars's mom should really talk to Sarah's mom. Clearly she had to go through a period of acceptance as well, and sometimes hearing from someone who's been through it is more helpful.

I'm not sure if she knows that their therapist is trans or not (he is, right? He's the trans guy from Eve's Apple, isn't he?). It's his right to decide who to tell, it has no effect on how good he is at his job. If she doesn't know he is, then his advice may ring slightly hollow. Even if she logically respects his experience and knows he knows what he's talking about, there's a difference between a person with no firsthand experience and someone who's actually been there.

Mars's mother has been in the trenches. She's seen the pain in her child, seen the struggles he faces for being transgender, sees that even though he passes there are still people who don't respect his gender, she's felt the ugly emotions, I'm sure she still faces horrible doubt and worry and fear, but she's also seen the effect it has on her child that makes it all worthwhile. It may be weird to befriend your ex's girlfriend, but I REALLY think that Sarah's mother needs to meet and talk to her or someone like her.

If no one has tried to get her in touch with either other parents going through this/who've gone through this, or trans people who can tell her what it's really like, that's a bit sad. She must feel very alone in this. We all saw how much it helped Sarah to know she's not alone, surely her mother could get the same benefit (which will only help Sarah more).
