Well, she lied, but given the situation, I think it's an easily forgivable lie. Hopefully Sarah will apologize for it, and they can move forward honestly from now on.

(I also note Wendy referred to her as 'she' without apparent hesitation...she's progressing pretty quickly.)

Sarah lied, yes. But notice Wendy said, "She LIED to me" and not "He LIED to me". Wendy's been lying to herself, and is probably only now finding out.

I wish I'd had Sarah's nerve/courage when I was her age. Of course, that was the 1960s, so things would have undoubtedly turned out very, very different.

You may want to re-read the strip, particularly the one where Sarah showed up at that teacher's class in a dress and introduced herself as Sarah and said that she was to be treated as a girl from now on.

Or, more recently, the strip during their date where the guy thought about how they really needed to set up a parent-teacher conference to talk about Sarah's being trans but realizing now wasn't the right time.

The situation as I recall it is that the mother agreed to allow Sarah to wear girl clothes at home so long as she agreed to present as a boy at school. Sarah then started changing at Irma's house on her way to school.

Oh wait, after breaking up with Irma. Seems to be a weekend. Sarah set out the door in her mourning dress this morning (Mom saw her go), met up with Molly, played with the doll outside, came back inside, did some colouring then Molly left leading into this conversation. School doesn't seem to have happened at any point in this.

As for where she's changed.... in my mind, she's been doing it in her treehouse, but I never really wanted to devote a strip to that and never figured out a way to work it in organically in an interesting way.

Not so soon. Sarah is still quite young, she's got a few more years before she should be totally independent. Kids are capable of it from a young age, the story of the 6 year old boy with age who has to take care of himself because his village shuns him comes to mind, but seeing a kid totally self-reliant at a young age is actually heart-breaking. Kids need time to just be kids.

Also, in fairness to her mother- she IS still very relevant to her daughter's life. If she hadn't torn down the principal, Sarah coming out at school wouldn't have gone nearly as well. Without realizing that was what she was doing, she laid the groundwork for Sarah to be able to go to school as herself without too many problems.
