Isn't that kind of the point? Raising your kid so that you're irrelevant to them?

.I work somewhere where there are kids with their parents. It's always "fun" watching a parent realise that their progeny is an independent person, just like they were. :-D

Not so soon. Sarah is still quite young, she's got a few more years before she should be totally independent. Kids are capable of it from a young age, the story of the 6 year old boy with age who has to take care of himself because his village shuns him comes to mind, but seeing a kid totally self-reliant at a young age is actually heart-breaking. Kids need time to just be kids.

Also, in fairness to her mother- she IS still very relevant to her daughter's life. If she hadn't torn down the principal, Sarah coming out at school wouldn't have gone nearly as well. Without realizing that was what she was doing, she laid the groundwork for Sarah to be able to go to school as herself without too many problems.
