Guest post by "Ranthog" I really hadn't given the bacon a second thought, besides noting that Sarah's family might not be that strict as far as being kosher. There is a lot of difference in practice between the different branches of Judaism, and the comic hasn't really focused on that aspect.
This is just doubly heart wrenching to read as it is so evocative of the emotions without a single word.
