hey being useful, i dont think its because sarah thinks she's a boy, or doesnt fully ID as female. she doesn't always wear a hat, but she often wears a crown(this comic is called The Princess, and being a Princess is something sarah identifies with VERY heavily)
but if it turns out that sarah is intentionally following the male tradition of keeping her head covered, it may be something of an internalized sense of duty to uphold something she doesnt necessarily agree with or find meaning in.
i grew up in a conservative christian household where girls had to wear dresses and boys had to wear pants. i was socialized as a girl, but identify as male. even after realizing that i dont agree with the traditions or religion of my family, it was hard to break all of the habits that were forced upon me as a toddler.
im not sure that a person who wasn't female/feminine spectrum identified would keep on presenting in a feminine manner when it got them assaulted and bullied, so im pretty sure you're either projecting this knowledge onto sarah(who may not even be aware of jewish traditions. if i remember right the necklace belonged to her grandma?), and she's just wearing cute stuff/her crown, or sarah DOES know about this traditionally masculine practice but only upholds it because its a habit that has been ingrained.
