Guest post by "Peaches" 'On' can be the right word. Kids don't say they are 'in' a bus, they say they are 'on' a bus even though they are, in fact, inside it. Since the van might belong to the school for short outings, he'd be riding on the van. Though 'on the van' doesn't sound as natural as 'on the bus'.
